A password manager: safer than a notebook, and easier

Bank, health insurer, online shop, council, email, streaming service. You need a password for everything. So it makes sense that people end up using the same password everywhere, or write everything down in a notebook next to the computer.

Why the same password everywhere is dangerous

Websites get hacked regularly. When that happens, lists of email addresses and passwords end up out in the open. Scammers then automatically try those combinations at banks, online shops and email services.

Do you use the same password everywhere? Then one leaked password gives them access to all your accounts. Through your email they can then click “forgot password” everywhere.

And the notebook?

A notebook is better than the same password everywhere. But it has drawbacks: it can get lost, it is not to hand when you are out, and anyone who comes into your home can read it.

What is a password manager?

A password manager, or password vault, is an app on your phone, tablet and computer that remembers all your passwords. You only have to remember one yourself: the password for the vault.

• When you log in somewhere, the vault fills in your password for you.
• The vault creates a different, strong password for every website.
• The vault warns you if a password has leaked.
• Your passwords are stored encrypted. That means only you can open the vault, not even the company itself.

Which vault do I use?

Your passwords are the most valuable thing you have online. That is why I work with 1Password, a paid password manager that has been known for years as safe and easy to use. Your vault is in the European region of 1Password, so your data is stored in Europe. The subscription costs about €4 per month, or about €6 per month for a family.

Isn’t that too difficult?

That is a sensible question. The answer: it is different, but not difficult. Once it is set up, what you mostly notice is that you have less typing to do. I set up the vault for you, put your passwords in it, and practise with you until it comes naturally.

An extra lock on your most important accounts

Along with the vault, I put an extra lock on your most important accounts, such as your email. Anyone who wants to log in then needs your phone as well as your password. If a scammer knows your password, your password alone won’t get them in.
