The trouble with passwords
For the bank, the health insurer, online shops, email. Everyone has dozens of passwords. So many people use the same password everywhere, or write them down in a notebook.
That is understandable, but not safe. If scammers get hold of your password on one website, they try it on your other accounts too.
What a password vault does
A password vault is an app that remembers all your passwords. You only need to remember one yourself. The vault fills in your password for you when you log in somewhere. And it makes a different, strong password for every website.
I work with 1Password, a paid and widely used password vault. Your vault is in the European region of 1Password, so your data is stored in Europe. Your passwords are locked away there. Only you can open the vault, not even 1Password itself.
You take out the subscription in your own name and pay 1Password directly: about €4 per month for one person, or about €6 per month for a family of up to five.
What I do for you
- I set up the password vault on your phone, tablet and computer.
- I put your passwords in it, including the ones from the notebook.
- I add an extra lock to important accounts, such as your email. Then nobody can log in with just your password.
- I practise with you until you can do it yourself.
Your digital legacy
What happens to your email, photos and accounts when you are no longer here? Many people have not arranged this yet. For those left behind, it often means a long search.
Together we put it in order:
- An emergency kit on paper. 1Password creates an emergency kit: one sheet with the details needed to open your vault. Together we decide where it is kept safely, for example in a sealed envelope with your will or with someone you trust.
- A family subscription, if you like. Then a son or daughter has their own vault in the same subscription, and you can share important details with each other.
- An overview of all your accounts and subscriptions. Then your family knows what needs to be cancelled.
- A legacy contact with Apple and Google, if you use them.
You stay in charge. Nobody can simply look inside your vault, not even me.
I visit you at home for this anywhere in the province of Utrecht, with no call-out charge. Usually that is on a Saturday.
